As new technologies in mobile phones emerge, Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC seeks to implement them with user customization in mind.
According to a Focus Taiwan report, HTC executives have placed a premium on producing more customizable smart phones that utilize different features — namely NFC. While NFC is seeing implementations across the mobile phone landscape, differentiation is certainly the key to increasing a telecom operator’s revenue.
HTC has been keen on taking advantage of the NFC trend, and its partnership with Chunghwa Telecom Co.— Taiwan’s largest wireless carrier— has enabled the handset maker to offer customizable NFC-enabled devices.
Chunghwa Telecom is also partnering with Samsung and Sony Mobile to produce NFC-enabled handsets for the companies’ suite of smart phone offerings. NFC technology will effectively allow smartphone users to make contactless payments in Taipei’s MRT and at local retail locations equipped with e-wallet services.
Chunghwa Telecom is expected to purchase no more than 1 million NFC-enabled smartphones in 2013, but this figure will span more than 10 different models.
A report released by Swedish research firm Berg-Insight revealed that the global market for NFC-enabled smartphones will reach 100 million units this year, up from 30 million in 2011.
