Cubic awarded contract to upgrade UK’s Northern Rail ticket issuing system

Northern Rail Ltd. in the United Kingdom has chosen Cubic to produce a $4 million (USD) ticket issuing system. The new system, known as FasTIS, will replace Northern Rail’s APTIS system, also a Cubic system, which has been in operation in the UK for almost 20 years. Northern Rail will install and integrate 236 FasTIS units at its 153 staffed stations as well as at its two training academies.
FasTIS System Design Offers Streamlined Transactions at Point of Sale
SAN DIEGO and LONDON–June 20, 2006–Cubic Transportation Systems Limited, a subsidiary of San Diego, California-based Cubic Corporation, has received a contract from Northern Rail Ltd., UK, for more than GBP 2.3 million (USD 4 million) for the supply, installation and maintenance of its next-generation ticket issuing system. The largest train operating company of the privatized rail network, Northern Rail operates services across all of northern England.
The new system, known as FasTIS, will replace Northern Rail’s APTIS system, also a Cubic system, which has been the workhorse for the rail industry in the UK for almost 20 years. Northern Rail will install and integrate 236 new FasTIS units at its 153 staffed stations as well as at its two training academies.
“The award of this contract is an important development as it furthers Cubic’s leading position in the UK ticketing business,” said Nigel Bryant, Cubic’s Managing Director in the UK.
Designed to provide a state-of-the-art ticket issuing system for use in rail booking offices, FasTIS provides streamlined ticket issuing while reducing wait times and long passenger lines at the point of sale. The user-friendly interface and ease of operation are central features of the new system which helps operators improve productivity and reduce rail retail costs.
FasTIS was also designed for use with Cubic’s contactless reader module used in London’s Oyster(R) ticketing system, which allows it to be interoperable with the Oyster card. Cubic developed and delivered the Oyster card system for Transport for London’s Underground and buses.
