Contactless badge turns Sin City into smart city for CES 2017

At one of the largest trade shows in the world, the Consumer Electronics Show or CES 2017, attendees have the opportunity to experience a multi-function contactless smart card solution that evokes the popular ‘Smart City’ concept. With more than 170,000 attendees crisscrossing Las Vegas venues, it is a project larger than many actual smart city prototypes.
NXP Semiconductors is working with the show’s host, the Consumer Technology Association, to deploy the contactless attendee badges featuring MIFARE DESFire EV2 contactless chips. The cards enable traditional show access and tracking, but they also open up a city full of additional services.
Using the NXP AppXplorer mobile app, attendees can download monorail tickets to their conference badge to take advantage of discounted ticketless travel. They can also reserve bicycles from the bikeshare network operated by NextBike.
In the NXP booth, a series of other applications are showcased letting attendees from “80% of the world’s countries” a glimpse at the power of ID technology.
“The badge demonstrates some of the many ways people conduct daily activities in smart cities around the world,” says Rafael Sotomayor, SVP and GM of security and connectivity at NXP. “Furthermore, NXP gives an outlook on future services being made available on event tickets – for example access to hotel rooms.”
