Confidex Delivers 300,000 RTI Gen 2 RFID Tags to Container Centralen
[09/12/07] Confidex, a fast growing company with unique expertise in RFID design, manufacturing and engineering, announced the completion of one of the largest UHF tag deliveries with encapsulated Gen2 tags. Container Centralen, a leading provider of high quality Returnable Transport Items (RTI) and pooling services with headquarters in Odense , Denmark , has taken delivery of 300,000 of the new, custom designed Confidex RTI Gen 2 tags for its CC Euro Dolly product. To date, the challenge in RFID-equipped returnable transport items has been to ensure that the tags fulfill the expected life-span requirement of the transport item, which is typically several years. The durable and compact-sized Confidex RTI tag satisfied this requirement with a warranty that enables the customer to calculate the true value of usage.
Given the unique requirements of the Container Centralen Euro Dolly project, Confidex delivered a unique tag specifically designed for this application. “The project was successfully completed and we are pleased with the results,” said Flemming Petersen, R&D manager at Container Centralen. “During the project, the performance of the tag was successfully qualified through extensive laboratory and field tests. To facilitate application of the tags in our Euro Dolly manufacturing process, Confidex also developed a special quality control system to automatically encode and validate the tags, and associate the two unique tag’s IDs with each Euro Dolly. Working together with Confidex on this project has helped us deliver a unique new product offering that brings value to our customers.”
The application involved attaching two of the RTI tags to each Euro Dolly during the manufacturing process. The RFID tags are powered by Monza/ID tag chips from Impinj Inc. that feature permanently locked, factory-programmed and secure identification numbers (in addition to the standard 96-bit electronic product code) that can associate a specific Euro Dolly to its owner. These tags will enable automatic collection of information as the Euro Dollies are transported across the retail logistics chain and will also serve to authenticate the Euro Dollies that are rented to customers by Container Centralen.
“We are very pleased that Confidex selected Impinj for the Container Centralen RFID deployment,” said Dimitri Desmons, vice president of marketing at Impinj. “In addition to providing unique identification numbers that authenticate reusable conveyances, the Monza/ID tag chips perform extremely well in environments where large numbers of products are stored in close proximity making them ideal for RTI applications. The focus on product quality and reliability, shared by Impinj and Confidex, is especially important in this application.”
“The new RTI tag shows the value of working closely with customers and partners to assure our products address an identified business need in the market,” said Jarkko Miettinen, vice president of marketing at Confidex. “We were able to offer the complete tag solution from tag design to finished, RFID-equipped Euro Dollies.”
