MasterCard has installed an additional 14,000 contactless payments in Australian-based Coles Supermarkets and have more than 100,000 terminals nationwide, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Contactless payments will help speed up checkout by enabling customers with either a MasterCard PayPass or a Visa payWave debit or credit card to simply tap and go against contactless terminals without needing a PIN or signature.
MasterCard expects the roll out will lead to a rapid rise in cashless payments. “It offers a level of convenience that’s better than handing over cash and fumbling for change,” said Matt Barr, head of market development and innovation, MasterCard Australasia,
Barr added, smart phone users should be able to make contactless payments through their mobile phone in early to mid 2013.
