Biometric ID company CLEAR is offering its expertise to pandemic protection efforts via a new program called CLEAR Health Pass.

The product is designed to help businesses – many them hit hard by closures and decreases in consumer and enterprise spending in recent months – screen their workers for COVID-19 as those employees return to work. The new digital biometric ID tool also could help retailers screen consumers who want to return to shops.

“By receiving verified data, you increase the health and safety for everyone – from your customers to your employees,” CLEAR said in an announcement regarding this new service. “Health Pass connects employees’ identity with a quick health check. Your customers can use the same simple process – making access safer and more comfortable for all. And CLEAR’s fast, touchless service alleviates congestion for healthier social distancing.”

Here’s how it works: A user downloads the CLEAR app and verifies identity via facial recognition, enrolling in the service for free. A user will then have to snap a selfie as part of the process to enter a business. The user also must complete a health survey designed to determine whether the person has symptoms that could indicate a novel coronavirus infection. CLEAR said that it also will enable users of the service to upload COVID-19 lab results or link to providers of virus screening tests.

After all that, users go to a CLEAR-provided pod to use facial recognition and QR codes to verify identity – and also perhaps undergo a quick temperature check by the organization controlling access to the particular building. The judgment on whether to allow entry is then made.

“Currently, anyone 18 or older with a US state ID, driver license, US passport, or permanent resident ID is eligible for a CLEAR membership and to use CLEAR Health Pass,” the organization said. “Health Pass is a free service but you must enroll in CLEAR to use it, which you can also do for free.” Existing CLEAR members can log into their accounts and select Health Pass on their home screens.

People who want to use CLEAR for travel through airport security checkpoints must still enroll in CLEAR Plus membership.
