We don’t know whether this will help thwart late returns, but Cambridge, Mass.-based TAGSYS is tagging books at China’s Shenzhen Library.
Within days, nearly 2 million RFID tags will be integrated and installed on books, CDs, VHS tapes, and even patrons’ cards.
“Through the deployment of the TAGSYS RFID system we have realized our vision for a fully-automated library where patrons can borrow and return books and other media entirely on their own,” said Wu Xi, Librarian Chief for the Shenzhen library.
TAGSYS Equips China’s Shenzen Library with Fully Automated RFID Infrastructure
Largest RFID library deployment in China; second largest in the world.
Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) June 26, 2006 – TAGSYS, the global leader in item-level RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) infrastructure, today announced that it has been awarded the largest library RFID project in China at the Shenzhen Library. By the end of June, nearly two million TAGSYS RFID tags will be integrated and installed on books, CDs, VHS tapes, patron cards, and other library materials by TAGSYS’ local integration partner, Shenzhen Seaever Enterprise Co. Ltd. The complete and fully automated RFID system is the second largest in the world – second only to the system developed by TAGSYS for the Seattle Public Library in Seattle, WA. It includes security gates, automatic self checkout and return stations, as well as programming and circulation stations.
“We are extremely proud to play a part in making Shenzhen Library a world-class, technologically innovative facility,” said Elie Simon, CEO of TAGSYS. “We have built a strong, trust-based partnership with Shenzhen Seaever Enterprise Co. Ltd. for mainland China and are reinforcing our leadership position in the library sector worldwide.”
TAGSYS has long been committed to growing its market share in Asia. In 2004, the company opened a Hong Kong office to establish a firm presence in the region. It has since begun deploying its item-level RFID systems in partnership with NEC Corporation, one of the world’s leading providers of Internet, broadband network and enterprise business solutions, and Shenzhen Seaever Enterprise Co. Ltd., a local RFID integrator.
The Shenzhen Library has been recognized worldwide for its technological and architectural innovations. The 50,000 square meter library features an open space, partition-free design and has the capabilities to store over four million books, service 8,000 patrons and circulate 50,000 volumes per day. Scheduled to open to the public in July 2006, it will serve as the documentation and information service center and regional library network center for Shenzhen.
“Through the deployment of the TAGSYS RFID system we have realized our vision for a fully-automated library where patrons can borrow and return books and other media entirely on their own,” said Wu Xi, Librarian Chief for the Shenzhen library. “We currently have more than 1.8 million books and expect our collection grow into the millions in the near future.”
