Boston College selects Fidelis Security Systems to protect networked administrative information
Following an external attack on its computer network last year when more than 100,000 alumni records may have been exposed, Boston College has implemented Fidelis Security Systems’ DataSafe Extrusion Prevention System to prevent future attacks. The new system will guard the college’s administrative records, including alumni information, donor data, student educational records, and other sensitive financial information.
DataSafe Enables Protection of Information Stored in Financial Support Systems and Educational Records
BETHESDA, MD–Fidelis Security Systems, the authority on extrusion prevention, announced that Boston College has selected the DataSafe Extrusion Prevention System to protect administrative data including alumni information, donor data, student educational records, and other sensitive financial information. DataSafe is the first Extrusion Prevention System and the only network security solution that prevents the unauthorized network transfer of critical or sensitive information across all channels on gigabit speed networks. DataSafe protects digital assets from unauthorized disclosure across all network channels including email, http, webmail, ftp, instant messaging and peer-to-peer communications.
“Balancing the public nature of the network we administer with the information we must protect is at the core of our overall security program,” said David Escalante, Director of Computer Policy and Security, Boston College. “DataSafe gives us the ability to implement granular policies to protect our sensitive information without compromising the information sharing critical to an educational institution. We take a very stringent approach to meet our security requirements, and made DataSafe our choice.”
Out of the box, DataSafe includes pre-built policies to enforce state regulations, the PCI security standard and HIPAA, thus protecting personally identifiable information including Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, address information and credit card numbers. DataSafe also includes pre-built policies for digital assets including computer source code, acceptable use and DoD data classification. All policies use information profiles to detect and prevent critical or sensitive information so they can be quickly deployed without the cumbersome and time-consuming registration process and maintenance process required in exact matching-based solutions.
“We are deeply committed to addressing the needs of the education market and are gratified that Boston College has selected DataSafe as its extrusion prevention solution of choice,” said Timothy Sullivan, CEO of Fidelis Security Systems. “Institutions like Boston College maintain tremendously valuable administrative data critical to their ongoing health and well-being and need a proven solution that prevents this information from being leaked.”
