Two biometric companies, BIO-key International and identiMetrics, have announced a new release of their fingerprint scanning technology that is used in schools for authenticating a student’s enrollment in the federal free and reduced lunch program. School officials are anticipating an increase in demand for the system as enrollment in the federal program spikes due to the economy.
In addition to the authentication of students in line for food, the system, called identify, also manages record-keeping for timely reimbursement and does not store actual fingerprint information to keep students’ biometric data safe.
