Australia’s ACTION bus fleet is initiating the roll out a new $8 million smart card ticketing system in Canberra, according to a GovMonitor report.
The roll out comes ahead of a trial of the system in late August, which is expected to provide an flexible cashless method of paying for travel charges.
The refillable, prepaid smart card will enable Canberran bus users to make quick payments, as the embedded microchip can be read without the need of removing it from a wallet or purse.
The smart card can be loaded with funds via the Internet, phone or at card facilities across the Australia Capital Territory.
Passengers will be required to tag-on and tag-off their bus, giving the transit a better capacity to monitor passenger trends and make adjustments as needed.
