Acer is planning to launch NFC-enabled smart phones for mobile banking and contactless payments, according to Taiwan News.
Acer product manager Vincent Chen told TN that the new phones will likely run on Windows 8, which is expected to support NFC technology. According to Chen, the roll out will depend on how quickly the five major mobile operators in Taiwan can agree upon a contactless mobile payments platform.
Chen says there are still some uncertainties as to what sort of services the platform will offer and how the cash flow will operate, but these are expected to be solved next year.
“Telecom operators have forecast that NFC technology will become critical for smart phones next year, and I think other cell phone makers will also regard this technology as a default function on their products by that time,” Chen told Taiwan News.
