3M Security Systems has debut its new multilateral border security program designed to enable quick, secure travel between Caribbean nations: the CARIPASS.
The CARIPASS is a voluntary travel card program that provides secure and simple border crossings for citizens and legal residents in the 10 Caribbean Community nations. To participate, eligible travelers must pre-enroll at local immigration offices and have a facial image and two fingerprints captured.
A card is then issued with a 2D bar code that is used to electronically process through self-service border crossing gates, connected to the system’s user database. After matching the user’s biometric data with that on the card, the gate opens and allows the traveler to pass through. A receipt is also printed at the gate for the traveler to document their valid entry.
The electronic immigration gate automates the border clearance process, allowing immigration officers to focus its resources on higher risk travelers, while low risk travelers such as CARIPASS holders benefit from quick and convenient processing.
