Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) is starting an NFC trial in cooperation with Taipei Smart Card Corporation in January 2008, utilizing the T80 NFC-enabled handset from BenQ. CHT has developed the Combi SIM card needed for the NFC-enabled phone, using secure smart card and NFC chip solutions from NXP Semiconductors. The T80 can be used for all NFC applications, from electronic ticketing and payment in Taipei’s rapid transit system to downloading advertisements and traffic information. The trial will run for three months before commercial roll-out, expected for the first half of 2008, begins. CHT commented that the NFC service will be further expanded once the more advanced SWP (single wire protocol) technology becomes more mature, according to DIGITIMES.
