The latest round of NSTIC pilot awards announced by NIST includes a two-time winner. MorphoTrust USA received a grant last year to pilot the creation of an electronic ID in North Carolina for accessing online services and the latest round of funding, the company will continue work on an electronic ID while focusing on the prevention of state tax refund theft.

Gallagher is in the process of installing its Personal Identity Verification solution at two undisclosed federal agencies inside the World Trade Center. The agencies will be using PKI-based authentication.

World leaders in the identity management industry will be in Washington D.C. September 28 and 29 for the 7th edition of the eID Conference. Some 300 delegates are expected for panel discussions and keynotes speeches about the global eID infrastructure, driver license technology and the digitalization of citizen ID documents.

Security and identity management are intertwining for an advanced degree program at The University of Texas at Austin. The new master’s program is being touted as the first of its kind. The Master of Science in Identity Management and Security (MSIMS) program is slated to welcome its inaugural class in the spring of 2016, with all applications due November 1.

One of the biggest culprits in successful terrorist travel is legal documents. Many terrorists are crossing borders using legitimate papers – sometimes with biometric documentation. Norwegian managed cloud provider Intility has deployed SMS PASSCODE’s Password Reset Module to more than 500 companies and 15,000 users on the Intility platform. Prior to deploying the solution, Intility’s policy of having users frequently change their password resulted in constant calls to the help desk.

Miami Dade Animal Services is using facial biometrics to reunite lost dogs with their owners. The shelter reports five reunions since it deployed the Finding Rover facial recognition technology in March. Dogs arriving at the shelter get their pictures taken and uploaded into the system. Users who download the app and register their pets can then search for found dogs that may be at the shelter.

Some Sunday worshipers are being tracked without ever signing an attendance book thanks to facial recognition software designed especially for churches. Churchix is a tracking software that identifies people in videos and photos. Its main purpose is to measure attendance at an event, like Sunday morning services.

It’s been nearly three years since the first grant award winners were chosen for the National Strategy for Trusted Identifies in Cyberspace (NSTIC) pilot projects. Three rounds of pilot winners have been selected each and Re:ID checked in with all of the previous winners and all were asked to share lessons they’ve learned from participating in the pilots. Evgeny Chereshnev, the global head of social media for IT security company Kaspersky Lab, was trying to figure out how individual’s can have better control over their personal information and decided on an experiment. It started with him implanting an NFC chip in his hand and trading in his work badge and he’s hoping it will to continue with more applications. Chereshnev spoke with Re:ID’s Gina Jordan about the experiment.
