In an effort to curb fraud via biometrics in the upcoming Bangladesh general election, the country is building electronic voting machines complete with 150,000 optical fingerprint modules from Crossmatch.

Bangladeshi voters must present a mandatory fingerprint biometric along with either a smart card or voter ID numbers while voting machine operators will be required to provide a fingerprint to access the machine and initiate voting.

Crossmatch, recently acquired by Assa Abloy and now part of HID Global, delivered the modules to the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory, the company that will build the voting machines.

According to Crossmatch, local media has widely reported that the elections commission is seeking to curb voter fraud and election rigging. This requires securely authenticating both individual voters and dispersed polling location staff.

Bangladeshi voters must present a mandatory fingerprint biometric along with either a smart card or voter ID numbers to verify identity. Voting machine operators will also be required to provide a unique password and fingerprint to access the machine and initiate voting.

The optical-based single fingerprint line is easy to use and delivers 500 dpi resolution for high quality print collection.
