Updated HID Global credential management system released

The newest HID Global credential management system update promises to make it easier for U.S. federal workers to authenticate themselves from more devices, including mobile phones. The new ActivID CMS 5.0 “makes identity more portable digitally across cards, phones and other devices, (and) takes advantage of new Windows software capabilities to simplify deployment of credentials,” says HID Global.
This newest version of the HID Global credential management system “digitizes smart card technology, expands the use of digital certificates in credentials and reaches new platforms that plastic cards don’t reach,” the company adds. That will ultimately help prevent data breaches and create a trusted digital environment.

More specifically, the HID credential management system enables users—most notably, federal workers who already use HID authentication and smart card ID technology—to have their credentials managed from the cloud. “ActivID CMS 5 enables customers to extend strong authentication to platforms that are not well suited for smart cards, including iOS phone and tablets and Windows 10 tablets like the Microsoft Surface Pro,” said Yves Massard, product marketing director for the government segment, IAM Solutions, within HID Global.
New capabilities of ActivID CMS 5.0 include:
- Eliminating the burden and cost of physically provisioning each plastic card for digital access and attaching a physical reader to a computer by making deployment easier and more cost-efficient
- Transporting the same identity of a person from a card to a mobile device in a seamless and compliant way
- Provide a cloud-ready solution for partners to integrate CMS 5.0 functionality into their own cloud platforms
HID Global credential management system scalability
The HID Global credential management system enjoys wide use across federal departments, and it is used in the operation of government ID badges—known as PIV cards. Enterprises and some of the company’s technology and solution partners also use the technology to increase the secure access of online resources. “With ActivID CMS 5, a federal worker will be able to provision a derived credential on his mobile device using his PIV card,” Massard said. “With that derived credential, the federal worker will be able to read his encrypted emails on his mobile device without using his PIV card.”
Massard said the system is designed with a wide scope in mind. “ActivID CMS 5 was designed to address a wide variety of customers and scale accordingly,” he said. “Some of ActivID CMS customers have as few as a couple hundred users, while some others have more than 1 million users. The default options make it easy to deploy for smaller customers while more advanced customers have the ability to customize and integrate the solution to fit the need of their environment.”
