Expert warns of need to change commercial biometrics approach

At the Biometrics 2009 Conference in London, Vali Ali, a technologist from Hewlett Packard, addressed future road blocks to the biometric industry’s commercial offerings, according to an Info Security article. Specifically, Ali spoke of fingerprint readers, the most commercially available biometric device, and their increasingly popular adoption with computers.
Among his concerns, Ali pointed out that many customers have found that the embedded fingerprint reader in their laptop will not work for them and that this is not uncommon with embedded fingerprint scanners. Among some solutions he suggests are simplifying the large number of standards and looking into other security issues such as how much sensitive biometric data a laptop itself holds in case of theft.
