TSA looking at vascular biometrics from TWIC program

As part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program, am initative that hopes to have biometric based smart cards for all port employees, the Transportation Security Administration has begun testing vascular scanning devices as a potential component of the program, according to a Security Info Watch article.

Identica Corporation, a developer of vascular biometric devices, has been involved as they have devices that fir the program’s needs.

Some of the challenges the TWIC has encountered that Identica has prepared to meet are the need for devices that can operate in extreme temperatures as many of the access control devices will need to be located outdoors, as well as a compact version of the device for identifying employees on site.
