SIA asks Texas to reconsider anti-RFID legislation

Don Erickson, CEO of the Security Industry Association, has written to the Texas House and Senate with their opposition to the state’s proposed legislation to prohibit RFID technology use in conjunction with tracking and gathering information about students.

The letter notes that no events have proven this technology to be harmful to students and says that its implementation has led to higher attendance verification which has meant more funding for schools. Additionally, the SIA believes that RFID technology can provide safety and security benefits that may help educational institutions, particularly after the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

The SIA also notes that many major RFID technology producers are based in Texas, and a loss of demand from schools could lead to economic problems and job losses in the state.

The association recently formed a committee of experts with knowhow about adoption of school security initiatives, and it has offered to share this information with the Texas government.
