The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is increasing the price of a day pass for MTS buses, encouraging passengers to avoid the additional charge by converting to a Compass Card, according to a local news report.

The Compass Card, a reloadable tap-and-go transit pass, offers passengers greater flexibility and increased security designed to prevent fraud and counterfeiting.

Compass cards last about five years and allow riders to reload their passes automatically online, by phone, at Albertsons locations and at Trolley ticket machines.

MTS officials said the conversion of paper passes to Compass Cards was necessary to prevent their fraudulent resale. They can also be registered to protect their value if they are lost or stolen.
