RFID technology used to secure medical samples at German lab

The Medical Care Center of Dr. Stein & Kollegen, a medical laboratory in Germany, deployed a wireless sensor network that utilizes RFID technology from IDENTEC SOLUTIONS to manage its daily shipments of blood and tissue samples.

On a daily basis the medical laboratory sees some 30,000 blood and tissue samples, all transported from various doctors’ offices, hospitals and other laboratories in approximately 600 special transport containers. Particular attention must be paid to temperature changes that can cause these transported samples to be unusable.

With the wireless network, staff now has the benefit of not having to perform manual temperature logging, which required high staff effort and is open to human error.

The system also provides safety features which include an alarm system, which forwards an error message in an electronic form to the appropriate personnel.
