As part of RFID World 2008, TechInsights and RFID Revolution have announced their selections as winners of the second annual RFID Excellence in Business Awards. The awards are intended to recognize companies and innovators whose products or implementations demonstrate the benefits of RFID.

The awards this year were offered in six categories:

For Excellence in RFID Implementation: the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of the Product Manager and Savi Technology won for the DOD’s Radio Frequency In-Transit Visibility Network project.

For Excellence in RFID Pilot Projects: the winner was Kimberly-Clark for their RTLS-Enabled Yard Management System.

For Excellence in RFID Technology: Sensormatic, a Tyco International Company, won for their iREAD Platform for item level retail.

The RFID Visionary of the Year: Victor Vega, Alien Technology’s Director of IC & Tag Product Marketing.

The Most Innovative RFID Application award: SkyeTek Inc. for Gaishan Technology’s use of its Secure RFID Reader Technology to assist the seeing-impaired

An award for efforts to protect the environment went to the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture for their project to improve food safety through an RFID-enabled Food Traceability System.

The winners were selected by a panel of eight judges, each connected to major organizations in the RFID industry.
