Research finds use for HVAC ducts as wireless monitoring

A new study conducted by a team of researchers has found a way to implement wireless monitoring technology by tapping in a building’s heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HIVAC) ducts, according to EurekAlert.

Uses range from climate control to health and safety applications – opening the door to RFID tag smoke detectors, carbon-monoxide monitors, or sensors that can detect chemical, biological or radiological agents.

The researchers focused on ultra-high frequency RFID systems, operating in the 902-928 MHz band in North America, and on various other bandwidths in other parts of the world. Also, the researchers found that, by tapping into a building’s HVAC system, the ultra-high frequency RFID tags can operate when located 30 meters or more from a reader.
