Report: 75% of mobile execs say NFC-enabled iPhone will cause surge in uptake

Seventy-five percent of mobile industry executives think the launch of a rumored NFC-enabled iPhone will cause a surge in NFC adoption, according to new research from M for Mobile.

M for Mobile’s “Mobile Payments Report 2012-2013″ contends that 2012 will prove to be the tipping point year for NFC mobile payments entering into the mainstream. According to the report, there are already several “pockets” of NFC activity worldwide, including “youthful, web savvy” nations like Poland and Turkey.

Moreover, NFC mobile penetration is expected to grow 1400% from 2015 to 2020, according to mobile industry executives interviewed in the report.

The report also took the opinions of 3,000 consumers from the U.S. and U.K. about NFC payments. Thirty-seven percent said they need further information about NFC before they use it, with two-thirds saying they would use NFC payments if they knew more about the technology. Over half of the surveyed consumers would transfer their main banking to an NFC payments account if there was a financial incentive in the form of discounts or rewards.
