Pret a Manger, maker of proper made sandwiches in the United Kingdom (UK), has reportedly seen a “huge surge” in users adopting and using contactless payment technology.

According to Computing.co.uk, contactless payments have gone from single digits to about 20% in the last 12 months. And with the sandwich chain gaining sales from the use of contactless technology, the firm is adamant to ensure it is ready for the roll out of other mobile payment solutions.

Pret a Manger has sufficient IT support, said Andy Chalklin, director of IT, delivery and support, but the company also wants to be ready for the adoption of other technology including NFC payments, which benefits both consumers and businesses.

He added, “As a retailer it (NFC payment) is faster, it is a guaranteed payment methodology; it is not subject to charge-back from the acquirer, it is accessible as people forget their wallets at home but not their phones. And, from a retailing perspective, it is cheaper at the moment.”
