Poor maintenance puts Romanian Police fingerprint system on the fritz

The Romanian Police no longer have access to their extensive set of databases that help them recognize and identify fingerprints and faces due to poor maintenance of the systems, reports Romania Insider.

The police use an Imagetrak database that contains many physical characteristics about registered suspects. For fingerprint recognition the police use AFIS 2000. The systems failed this past June when they experienced an irreparable fault in the power supply.

The government said that the maintenance contracts for the systems had run out, which caused the delay in repairs. It has since set aside money for new contracts and began those negotiations on September 14.
