PayByPhone delivers UK’s first NFC parking solution

The city of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England has partnered with PayByPhone to introduce the UK’s first NFC-enabled parking payment solution.

Installed this past weekend, the new system enables drivers in all of Tumbridge Wells’ 15 council-run parking lots to pay for their parking fees with a tap of an NFC-enabled Android or BlackBerry phone equipped with the PayByPhone app.

PayByPhone has placed NFC stickers onto all “pay and display” machines in Tumbridge Wells’ council-run parking lots. According to PayByPhone, the user simply taps her NFC enabled mobile phone over the NFC logo on the sticker to launch the PayByPhone app and receive a unique parking location number. The user then enters the length of time she wishes to park and her card security number. A quick confirmation ends the transaction.

PayByPhone’s system also accepts payments online or via text, phone call, mobile web or iPhone app.

According to Bevan, PayByPhone plans to roll out NFC payments to all of its clients by the end of 2012.
