Over 1.5 million enrolled in UK Post Office biometric ID service

The U.K.’s Post Office Limited has enrolled more than 1.5 million individuals in its Applicant Enrollment Identification (AEI) service that collects biometric information for identification.

The AEI service utilizes 3M Cogent Biometric Enrollment Stations (CBES) to capture applicants’ fingerprints, photographs and digital signatures for use by various clients, including the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the UK Border Agency.

The DVLA leverages the AEI service for drivers’ license renewals, automating the renewal process through the CBES.

The U.K. Border Agency collects biometric data for non-European Economic Area and Swiss nationals planning to be in the country for over six months. The Post Office branches facilitate the collection of this data and send it to the Border Agency. Once the data is checked and verified, the Border Agency issues the applicant a Biometric Residence Permit.

The AEI system is located in over 750 spots throughout the country.
