Orange, France’s largest mobile operator, has partnered with Gemalto to roll out NFC-enabled SIM cards nationwide.

Acccording to Orange, the wide-scale deployment of Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC SIMs will enable service providers, such as banks, transport operators and retailers, to deploy mobile contactless services on a massive, nationwide scale.

Orange will offer service providers a secure space on the SIM cards to manage and update their customers’ personal data, as within a vault. According to Gemalto, the SIMs enable any service provider to manage its own security domain on the card and to load, personalize and update its related NFC applications remotely over time.

Orange subscribers will be able to download, activate and use these NFC applications on their phone, creating an expandable wallet of new applications for payments, transportation, ticketing and loyalty programs, according to Orange.
