Nokia India is in talks with a number of India’s Metro Rail projects to introduce NFC-enabled ticketing, according to MyDigitalfc.

“Most Metro Rail projects in the country are discussing the possibility of an NFC-based solution for ticketing with us,” explained D. Shivakumar, Nokia’s senior vice president of sales in India, Middle East and Africa. “There is a strong intention on their part to deploy the solution so as to reduce long queues and the other hassles of getting train tickets.”

Nokia has already partnered with India-based wireless transactions provider PayMate to introduce an NFC-enabled solution that lets users access goods and services, as well as perform peer-to-peer data exchanges, via NFC phone. According to MyDigitalfc, the partners could work with banks to expand their offering to India’s various Metro Rail projects.

Shivakumar has yet to reveal any further details about the potential NFC projects, but the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has reportedly started accepting bids from banks to participate in its automatic fare collection system. According to MyDigitalfc, Chennai is considering only bids from banks who plan to support NFC.
