MTA taps Nokia for NFC transit ticketing

Nokia has announced that it will work with the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority to pilot NFC-enabled mobile ticketing.

According to a small footnote on a recent Nokia press release, the Finnish company has reached an agreement with the MTA to develop a NFC-based smart phone ticketing solution that will be piloted on New York regional commuter trains before the end of 2011.

This means that by the end of the year, select New Yorkers will be purchasing and redeeming their subway tickets with the simple tap of their NFC-enabled smart phone.

Nokia has yet to release any further details about the pilot, but Ubergizmo and others are speculating that the pilot will involve Nokia’s Symbian-based 603 handset, which is the first Nokia phone to receive card emulation capabilities.

Neither of Nokia’s newly announced Windows Phone smart phones, the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710, appear to be NFC-enabled, according to the release.
