LinkedIn breach reiterates need for secure passwords

After LinkedIn reported a breach of at least six million passwords, news outlets, including Gadgets.TMCnet.com, have reiterated the need for more secure password use online.

While many regulators have implemented systems such as two-factor authentication and one-time passwords, but many online users still have pertinent personal information stored behind password walls that are too easily breached.

Experts advise that users have different passwords for different accounts so that if one is compromised, not all of them are compromised. Another suggestion is to make up answers for the common security questions, because anyone who knows you will probably also know the answer to these questions.

Passwords should be alphanumeric, contain upper and lowercase letters. Including special characters and symbols also strengthens passwords. Above all, make sure a password is longer than eight characters so that it’s not easily cracked with hacking software.
