Last of eight Australian international airports receives biometrics gates

Darwin International Airport in Australia has launched its own SmartGate counters that enable users with specific passports to rely on automated kiosks utilizing face recognition to get through customs as opposed to traditional manned counters, according to a ZD Net article.

The implementation of the SmartGate technology at Darwin makes it the eighth of Australia’s airports to receive the technology and the last as it was the final international airport to not have the option for Australian and New Zealand travelers.

Additionally, the new technology keeps in line with the released Industry Survey report from the Biometrics Institute that detailed biometric border security as one of the biggest drivers of the market for biometrics, especially in Australia and New Zealand where most of the respondents live and work.
