Korean Airport using biometrics to ease traveler experience

The Incheon International Airport in Korea is using a program developed through its U-Airport Team that enables the use of biometrics to streamline multiple aspects of a traveler’s experience, according to a Future Travel Experience article.

The program utilizes a variety of kiosks called U-Self Check-In, U-Departure Gate, U-Immigration and U-Automated Boarding that use fingerprint recognition or face recognition to authenticate traveler identities.

Through the new program, travelers at Incheon International Airport are able to use their e-passport, which contains their biometric data on a scannable chip, in conjunction with their own biometrics to authenticate their identities at immigration, check-in, security and boarding.

Despite the idea behind the kiosks is to speed up interactions in the four check point areas at an airport by removing human interaction and not removing security, human agents are always nearby in case the need for intervention arises.

Officials from the Incheon International Airport U-Airport Team believe that not only is the program increasing both efficiency and security at the airport, but also that it is the first step towards what they expect to be an airport that utilizes only biometric data for security and check-in instead of boarding passes and passports.
