Japanese teleco KDDI has selected Gemalto to help roll out NFC services to KDDI’s 34 million subscribers.

According to Gemalto, the company is providing KDDI with its Allynis Trusted Service Manager (TSM) software and UpTeq NFC high-end security device to aid in the deployment of multiple contactless services ranging from mobile payments, transit ticketing, e-driver’s licenses and smart posters.

KDDI began replacing standard SIMs/UICCs in their handsets with Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC solution last year, so that that they would be in position for a mass commercial launch of NFC services now, according to Gemalto.

The launch is a part of the recently announced Japan Mobile NFC Consortium, which brings together the country’s three largest operators to coordinate the adoption of multiple international standards for NFC.
