Secure transactions company Intelling has released a Smart Insights report demonstrating the identity documents market in Southeast Asia.

The report is the result of a study of the various eID projects that have been deployed in Southeast Asia. The report identifies the increasing role that identity credentials play in eGovernment projects, as international compliance encourages governments to issue electronic and biometric passports.

Intelling’s report also states that Countries with the largest populations will drive the rollout of e-passports in the Asian region. Notably, the Philippines are positioned to become one of the largest global issuers of e-passports as a result of its substantial population and a high percentage of international migrants.

Smart Insights anticipates that the total global volume of ePassports in the Asian region will exceed 71 million units by 2017.

Many countries in the region are setting up national electronic ID card projects with some of the more aggressive programs aiming for full population deployment in as little as 18 months. Smart Insights anticipates there will be more than 350 million eID cards installed by 2017 with an additional 70 million driving licenses being issued throughout the region.
