This year’s open house at Intel Labs Seattle featured a number of exciting new RFID projects in development, including a solar powered RFID chip, and “WISP,” a specially enhanced RFID tag.

WISP (Wireless Identification and Sensing Platform) tags are unique in that they are powered by both UHF RFID readers and built-in solar cells. The tags, which contain sensors and a microcontroller, are being used by the Intel researchers for everything from gaming applications to undersea neutrino detection, according to a report on xconomy.com.

Another demo displayed at the open house was Intel’s magnetic resonance project for wirelessly charging electronic devices. Intel researchers have developed a way to send power and radio waves in the same transmission to charge electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops within three feet away.
