Schools in the Panchkula, a district in the Indian state of Haryana, are looking to installing biometric attendance readers in an effort to combat the growing problem of teacher absenteeism, according to a Times of India article.

The new technology is expected to be implemented in August.

The introduction of biometrics is more of a last resort than an initial attempt at fighting the missing teacher problems as the department had tried to reach a certain attendance level previously through frequent unscheduled visits over the past six months.

Additionally, the city-wide implementation of the technology is following the successful pilot at a school. While some representing teachers and others with interests in the education sector are not happy with the decision to move forward with such as system, parents of students in the district have shown great support.
