The Department of Transportation and Communications (Philippines) announced a proposed project to install a contactless ticketing system for Metro Rail Transit (MRT), according to Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation.

The project will consist of at least one million contactless cards/media, the installation of 76 automatic gates at the 13 stations of the MRT, readers at every automatic gate, at least 52 ticket value loading or reloading machines, and the installation of software and hardware components.

The DoTC said the government intends to unify the ticketing systems of MRT and Light Rail Transit (LRT). Passengers will soon use a single ticket to ride the mass transport systems and use the same for electronic banking and shopping.

The government is accepting project proposals for the supply of contactless ticketing system for the Metro Rail Transit, which traverses the stretch of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue from Taft Avenue in Pasay to North Avenue in Quezon City, has a daily ridership of close to 500,000.
