Garden Fresh Restaurants, a buffet-style restaurant chain, has implemented a fingerprint-based authentication system from DigitalPersona at each of its point-of-sale (POS) systems in an effort to control access and improve accountability with their registers, according to a Security Director News article.
While not the only security measure implemented in the year since the solutions were installed at the POS systems at all 125 locations, Garden Fresh has seen a savings of $900,000.
In response to the success at the POS systems, the chain is planning an introduction of fingerprint biometrics at the time clocks for employees as well in an effort to save money through eliminating buddy punching, the act of having an employee punch another employee in or out despite his not being present.
While biometrics have seen an increase in use at restaurants and other retail establishments, many large chains such as Wendy’s and Jack in the Box have looked into the technology, but aren’t sold on it due to a discomfort with introducing the new technology. The chains also have other costly items prioritized ahead of the biometric systems or have not seen enough enough issues that biometrics would fix.
