The Leon County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has added fingerprint recognition to its arsenal of tools to help identify suspects, reports WCTV.

The office has invested about $144,000 in the Rapid ID system. This portable system identifies suspects by taking and reading their fingerprints. It then can immediately tell if the suspect has a criminal record.

Officers will use the system with the suspect’s consent or if the officer has reason to think the suspect is lying about his identity.

The sheriff’s office bought 80 units through a homeland security grant. Each patrol unit will carry one.
