The State of New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles has implemented a smiling ban for driver license photos in an effort to protect its facial recognition database.

As reported on RT.com, the state updated its rules earlier this year to do away with drivers smiling because its facial recognition database has problems managing large numbers of photos that include smiles and smirks.

New Jersey isn’t the only state that collects facial images and stores them in a database for future identification needs. Arkansas, Indiana, Nevada and Virginia all have passed legislation for facial capture.

The state can share the information in its database with the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) program.
