According to an article in Government Computer News (www.gcn.com) the Federal Aviation Administration will issue more than 50,000 smart cards to employees and contract workers this year.

The agency hopes to standardize the process of issuing badges, reduce background investigation turnaround times and eliminate the use of multiple IDs. A Request For Proposal is to be released in the coming weeks with the culmination of the pilot targeted for early next year.
