Experts: Gesture-based authentication for ATMs long way off

Although gesture-based technology is being used in the video game and health care industries, it’s still a long ways off from being a viable authentication method for ATMs.

As reported on ZDNet, experts from Frost & Sullivan and Forrester Research say gesture-based technology is still in its early stages and is more of an interface that would enable connectivity with machines rather than being an additional layer of security for ATM transactions.

Gesture-based authentication would also require a significant investment in cameras and sensors to make use of the technology. This equipment requirement may pose as a barrier to implementation.

User acceptance of gesture-based authentication may also be slow, as users may not want to be as open making gestures that could possibly be lifted by others.

The experts did note that gesture recognition in conjunction other biometric authentication may become a viable option.
