After security breaches impacting Dropbox and other cloud-based companies, Dropbox is launching two-factor authentication as an added security measure, reports eWeek.

When the service is enabled, Dropbox users will have to enter both their password and a six-digit security code whenever they sign in or link a new device to Dropbox. Users may choose a third-party authenticator app that’s available for Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows phones or receive the security code via text message.

Dropbox announced this feature through one of its community tech forums asking trial users to test the new system.

The company decided to add the additional layer of security after hackers used stolen passwords to log in to Dropbox accounts. Part of the damage from this attack may have been a spam campaign launched after the breach allowed hackers to pilfer user e-mail addresses.
