Crestron demonstrates innovative in-home uses for NFC

The recent CEDIA 2012 conference displayed a number of household uses for NFC technology, including some ideas from Crestron’s Core 3 UI ecosystem.

Crestron’s sees NFC technology as the key to in-home automation and demonstrated its AirConnect solution. The AirConnect demo saw an NFC-enabled smart phone unlock a door, turn on music and change to the user’s desired preset channel, as CEPro.com reports.

The AirConnect ecosystem work by placing NFC tags throughout the house— behind keypads, encased in light dimmers or over door locks and thermostats— where a smart phone can then interact with the two-way technology. A simple tap of the smart phone will initiate the tags’ commands, and will be able to identify the user.

Currently operating on a number of Android devices and plans for Apple iOS 6 compatibility on the horizon, the ecosystem will support most NFC devices.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Crestron’s NFC ecosystem are the cost effective, user-programmable tags. The user simply scans a tag, presses the “start” button on their mobile device, sets their preferences, and presses the “record” button.

Crestron’s Core 3 UI platform places a premium on simplicity for both consumers and dealers alike. Providing simple and accessible solutions is perhaps the key to household NFC technology’s future.
