The City of York Council has announced plans to introduce a new transit card scheme, according to squidcard.com.

The city is set to apply for £2 million in government funding to support the installation of a new electronic transit card system, enabling local residents to pay for their travel by simply holding their card against the provided reader.

The plans also include five bus interchanges which would feature real-time electronic information boards with timetable and map displays.

If unsuccessful, plans are already in place to introduce a common paper-based ticketing system by the end of spring, which would allow passengers to travel across the city using the same ticket to ride on different bus operator services.
