Broadcom announced the release of a new chip that will enable handset makers to offer smart phones with 3G, GPS and NFC for only $100.

In addition to Broadcom’s “InConcert connectivity suite,” the BCM21552G baseband features a 1 GHz ARM11 processor, support for an 8 megapixel camera and WVGA screen support, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11n, FM radio and native support for dual SIM.

“The challenge of mobile terminal makers today is delivering a compelling smart phone experience to a larger audience of phone buyers,” said George Guo, CEO of TCL Communication Technology. “Broadcom’s new 3G cellular platform enables a broader tier of no-compromise smart phones that feature stunning graphics, powerful OS support, and the most advanced connectivity features like NFC and Wi-Fi Direct. With this new platform we are able to attack new markets requiring lower cost yet not compromising on performance or quality.”

Broadcom has yet to set a release date for the BCM21552G, but the chip was on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
