Companies that use biometric time clock software to register employee attendance are finding that the addition of biometric factors eliminates the phenomenon of “buddy punching,” or having one employee clock in for another.

As reported on UTSanDiego.com, implementing fingerprint biometrics or facial recognition software as part of the time clock system means that employees can no longer punch in for a fellow employee who’s running late.

This “buddy punching” is somewhat common practice. In a 2008 study of 21 companies, Nucleus Research found 19% of employees doing this at least once a year.

Companies such as ProcessingPoint have software that enables employees to clock in using biometrics. Its software is flexible enough to enable for remote login in a variety of ways, including through geo-locations on a smartphone.

ProcessingPoint will be offering the option of facial-recognition time clock software in the next three to four months. The system is anticipated to cost between $299 and $399.
