There have been a lot of questions circulating around regarding the recent news of Barclays contactless cards and how customers could have their data potentially stolen without even knowing it, according to SC Magazine UK.

Barclays answered, reassuring customers that “the only information which can be obtained from a contactless chip is the same which is already printed on the front of the card. This does not include secure information such as PIN or signature (CVV) code.”

Working with a mobile phone security company viaForensics, Channel 4 News was able to extract data from the cards including number, expiration and the owner’s name. They were not, however, able to obtain information such as PIN or signature (CVV) code.

“The details obtained should not be sufficient to undertake any fraudulent activity,” explained Barclays, “We do depend on retailers upholding the same high standards of security when verifying payment details.”

Barclays added, “To be clear, this is not an issue with contactless but with the checks undertaken for ‘card not present’ payments by some retailers.” The British banking and service provider is now engaging with retailers to ensure that they are undertaking adequate and robust checks.
